Sort of random, but here are 20 sites you should be checking on a regular basis.
All of them are aimed at helping you learn and understand the digital tools around you.

We’re a little more than a month out and I’d like to talk a bit about some business-y things.
First, we’ve had a National Press Photographers Association Student Chapter/Club for the last few years that hasn’t gotten very far. A few meetings, but not much has happened. I’d like to get this rolling this year, so we need, at minimum, a President and Treasurer. To get access to student funds, those two folks will need to go through some financial training seminars … it isn’t too bad, but it will get us access to a couple hundred dollars the club can use to bring in a speaker, run an event or put up a gallery.
So, who’s in?
Football … football is kind of big around here, so Prof. Biddle, Prof. Suggs and I have been tossing around an idea to create a web show/site about high school football. We want to prototype it this year, so mark out Friday, Sept. 16 and Friday, Oct. 14 for some Friday night football. I’ll email you some details here in a few minutes.
Fall … lots of thinking still to go and I’m interested in your expectations. What do you want out of this class? What are you expecting? What’s your biggest fear? Leave a comment, start the discussion.
By August 1, please create a WordPress.com account so we can give you access to this site. (Those of you who had access to the DocPhoto blog, I’ll move you over.)
More as it develops …

FYI, the American Le Mans Series will race on Sunday afternoon, you can watch it on Speed Channel at 4 p.m. This is the last race before ours, so you should take a look to see what you are in for.
Qualifying for the race is going on as I type, if you want to become a real junkie …

(Yes, this is a crosspost to VisualJournalism.info.)
Adam Westbrook, who is pretty smart even by British standards, did a five-part series on blogging for journalists. Won’t take too much of your time and, if you’re not blogging, you need to do this to survive in journalism now …
Great info in each of those posts, even if you’ve been doing this for a while.

Almost there, almost there … syllabus is now online, has links to the text book you’ll need to get. It’s in the bookstore, hopefully you’ve been planning ahead and thought to order it online?
We’ll distribute your camera kits on Tuesday, so if you have something that needs to come back in, make sure it comes to class with you.
A few quick reminders … October 2 is the Petit Le Mans workshop … December 3-4 is the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar. Get those on your calendar, the former is required, the latter is Strongly Recommended.
We have rebuilt the lab, but it still needs a little tweaking. I’ll be in there Tuesday at 1, if you’re around and want to lend a hand or just chat and catch up, swing by.
Are you ready?

Even though we are a month away from starting, here’s a New York Times piece you should take a look at.
In addition to covering photojournalism we are going to spend some time talking about your “digital persona” – who you are online and how you can take advantage of that.
Thoughts?

As a reminder, you’ll need to have a site up and running and a subject approved by Friday, August 28 at 5 p.m. I’d recommend building a site on WordPress.com – easy to do, easy to manage, can handle photos and captions easily.
Meantime, here are the links to what I showed in class Tuesday as well as a few others:
There are lots of ways to approach this – start writing out ideas, bounce them off friends, think about how doable they are.

We will talk about photojournalism, photography, history, sociology, psychology, legal issues and a whole host of other things this semester, but the main thing I hope you’ll do is to start thinking critically about everything around you. And I don’t mean that in a snarky way, I mean that you take a reasoned, analytical approach to observing your world, our world.
As an example, my good friend Alberto Rigau recently wrote about an exit door and how it had failed as a design element – to the point that lives could be in danger.
